Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins

Determined to follow his spiritual calling, Alfred enrolled at St. Theresa Minor Seminary, Oke-Are, Ibadan, where he pursued his secondary education from 1971 to 1976. It was during this formative period that the seminary’s motto, “Ad Altare Dei” (To the Altar of God), left a lasting impression on his young and discerning mind.

Seminary Formation

Upon completing his studies at St. Theresa Minor Seminary, he expressed his desire to continue his priestly formationunder the Archdiocese of Lagos. He was subsequently admitted to the Seminary of SS. Peter and Paul, Bodija, Ibadan, in 1976, where he underwent rigorous theological and spiritual training.

During his time in the seminary, he demonstrated exceptional academic and leadership qualities. He earned a Diploma in Religious Studies from the University of Ibadan in 1978 and later obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from the Pontifical Urban University, Rome, in 1983.

Beyond academics, young Alfred was known for his reflective nature, deep spirituality, and outstanding interpersonal skills, making him a favorite among both peers and lecturers. He also showcased remarkable athletic abilities, excelling in basketball. His exemplary character, strong leadership, and commitment to the priesthood earned him the prestigious role of Senior Prefect during the 1982/1983 academic session.

His dedication and academic excellence culminated in his graduation with First-Class Honors in Theology. Having successfully completed his priestly formation, he was ordained a deacon at Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, on September 18, 1983, alongside seven classmates, collectively known as “The Class of Eight”. The ordination was conducted by His Grace, Most Revd. Anthony Olubunmi Okogie.

Priestly Ministry

Following his ordination, Rev. Fr. Alfred Martins embarked on a journey of dedicated service and pastoral ministry. His first assignment was as Assistant Administrator at Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, where he served from October 1983 to August 1984, assisting in parish administration and ministering to the spiritual needs of the faithful.

In September 1984, he was transferred to St. Gregory’s College, Obalende, Lagos, where he taught and served as chaplain until September 1986. His natural gift for teaching, inherited from his educator parents, became evident during this time. While at St. Gregory’s, he also ministered as the priest in charge of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Maroko, and served as chaplain to Holy Child College, Obalende, further expanding his reach in Catholic education and pastoral care.

Recognizing his passion for teaching and formation, Fr. Martins was appointed to SS. Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Bodija, in September 1986 as a Graduate Assistant, contributing to the training of future priests. He taught courses in Philosophy and, in 1988, after obtaining a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Ibadan, he was elevated to the status of Lecturer.

During his years at the seminary, Fr. Martins held several key administrative positions, including:
✔ Bursar of the Seminary (1988-1994) – Overseeing financial management and resource allocation.
✔ Registrar (1994-1996) – Managing academic records and administrative affairs.
✔ Secretary, Appointments & Promotions Committee (1994-1996) – Assisting in faculty evaluations and promotions.

His quest for deeper philosophical and theological knowledge led him to the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, where he obtained a Master of Letters (M.Litt) degree in Philosophy in 1997. Determined to further his academic pursuits, he immediately enrolled for a PhD at the University of Edinburgh and had just submitted his research proposal when a divine call to higher responsibility came.

In 1998, the Holy Father appointed him as the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Abeokuta, a historic and sacred mission that marked the beginning of another significant chapter in his priestly journey.
